Remote Pairing and Screencasting


I'm starting to question the value of blogging as a way of rallying community efforts.  I'm inclined to focus more on article-style blogging vs. conversational-style blogging and moving the conversation to Skype+VNC and recording the interactions and minimally producing screencasts of interesting interactions.

I'm not sure how it'll all work and I definitely need help with the logistics and any recommendations anyone has is welcome.  As a 'prove me wrong' experiment, I'd like to try to rally-via-blog folks to do screen casts with each other and, hopefully, a few with me (I want to learn too, please!).  Any advice as to which software to use for voice (Skype?)  for screen viewing (VNC?) for capturing video (Camtasia? CamStudio?) for capturing audio, post-production, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Screencasts could be very useful. I think this would help the cross polination of ideas and help show things in practice.

Rob Conery started to do this with an MVC project and it has helped fuel some discussion in blogs. So they will help focus and fuel each other (screen casts and blogs)

Skype is very useful and recommended. For a shared desktop, try Microsoft's free and new SharedView application.

The Camtasia folks have also released a free tool name Jing that lets you record up to 5 minute long screencasts and they provide free hosting for the files, as well.

@Jim: Yeah, what Rob Connery is doing is awesome. His casts are more kinda training/lecture (which is great, that's definitely NOT a bad thing). I'm going for a slightly different goal and audience and thought about taking a different tact: to record collaborative sessions and conversations

@Paul L:  Skype: Definitely. That worked well.  SharedView didn't work out so well. Very slow for some reason. I think you need lotsa up stream bandwidth (which I don't currently have).  VNC was proposed, I'm looking into that.

RE: Jing: Tried it, very VERY cool... 5 minutes is worthless for me though :(

Is there a secure VNC client out there? How slow is the MS bundled Remote Assistance? I tried SharedView and like you said, it is painfully slow for the guy on the other end.

I'm not as concerned with secure, in fact it'd be neat if we could multi-cast so people could tune in and watch the live event.

Not sure about remote assistance, I've used it before and it seemed to work OK. Interesting angle there, I'll look into it.
